Bontrol Systems is a second generation, family owned representation firm specializing in custom engineered equipment for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
Founded in 1982 by Frank Bonneville, who put the BON in Bontrol, Bontrol Systems has enjoyed steady growth and continued success. Richard Cousin, a California native, Eagle Scout and graduate from CSUS, joined Bontrol Systems in 1995 and assumed control in 1998.
Bontrol Systems maintains a reputation of integrity and stability achieved through treating all people as partners with common goals. Richard's simple philosophy is a recipe for success.
Richard recalls his first large sale as a manufacturers' representative. It was the end of a 3 day show and the very last person to come by worked for Hewlett-Packard and mentioned they were having problems building transformers. "This off- handed comment resulted in HP transferring their entire production lines to my principal with over one million dollars in sales the first year." On another account, Richard started out specifying a dc motor and ended up with the entire project turn-keyed an initial purchase order of one million dollars.
With over 35 years of experience, Richard always tries to understand when the customer is sold. "This can occur within the first few meetings. The secret is to work closely with your principals to make it happen. I remember making a cold call to a large OEM. On my second call I met a key engineer, referring me to purchasing with a parting comment of 'good luck because it's like meeting the Pope'. To my surprise, I was able to meet with the purchasing manager who recognized my principal, gaving me instant credibility. He was sold then and it took two more years of effort to get qualified, but I never gave up."
